Butyl Acrylate (CH2=CHCOOC4H9) is an acrylate ester derived by the formal condensation of the hydroxy group of butan-1-ol with the carboxy group of acrylic acid. It is functionally linked to butan-1-ol and an acrylic acid. It is a monofunctional monomer comprising an acrylate group with high characteristic reactivity and a cyclic hydrophobic group. It is produced using a simple reaction between acrylic acid and n-butanol in the presence of an acid catalyst at elevated temperatures, also yielding water as a by-product.

The chemical looks like a clear, colourless liquid with a sharp characteristic ester-like odour. It is a slightly water-soluble and has less density than water. Its molecular weight is 128.2g/mol. It is a slightly volatile liquid and completely soluble in alcohols, ethers and almost all organic solvents. It has a wide range of features and advantages, including Adhesion, Hydrophobicity, Low-temperature performance, water resistance, strength & durability, viscosity, flexibility, and weatherability. It has a density of 0.898 g/cm3 at 20 °C. Its respective boiling, freezing, and melting points are 148 °C, 64 °C and – 64 °C.

Butyl Acrylate is mainly used for making paints, coatings, caulks, sealants, and adhesives, which is driving the market's growth. It is also employed as a raw material for fibre processing agents, adhesives, plastics, coatings, acrylic rubber, and emulsions. Furthermore, it finds application in the production of homopolymers and co-polymers, which can be used in water-based industrial and architectural paints.

In cleaning products, it finds usage in adhesives, antioxidant agents, textiles, enamels, caulks and paper finishes. In addition, it can also be used to make organic glass and as a comonomer in acrylic dispersions synthesis used in adhesives, binders, and impregnating compositions in the leather, printing, paint, varnish, pulp and paper, and other industries.
