It remains stable under normal conditions and is not a light-sensitive chemical. Its autoignition temperature is 457 °C. It decomposes when heated at high temperatures. It emits irritating gaseous chemicals on heating.

It is a clear chemical liquid with a strong, unpleasant taste. It is a combustible liquid that is chemically incompatible with strong acids and alkali chemicals. It is also incompatible with strong oxidizing agents. It is obtained by the catalytic reaction between phthalic anhydride and ethanol in the presence of sulfuric acid.
