As an unstable chemical, it readily reacts with other compounds, participating in the formation of various chemicals. For example, it reacts with bases like sodium hydroxide to produce sodium nitrate and water, and with acids to form corresponding acids and byproducts.

In commercial and chemical applications, Dinitrogen Pentoxide is used as a strong oxidizing agent, notably in high-fuel rockets as an oxidizer. It also acts as a nitrating agent in modern organic chemistry. A mixture of Dinitrogen Pentoxide and nitric acid serves as an effective nitrating chemical. Additionally, it is used in the preparation of certain explosives and as a reagent in organic synthesis to add the -NO2 functionality to organic compounds.
