Dioctyl Terephthalate (DOTP) (C24H38O4) is the terephthalic acid and 2-ethylhexanol’s ester. It’s a vital phthalate-free plasticizer, a diester of terephthalic acid and the branched-chain 2-ethyl hexanol. It is a plasticizer which is made by alcoholysis of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) with isooctyl alcohol.

DOTP appears to be a clear, colourless liquid that has a slight odour. It is insoluble in water. It is a viscous liquid that offers great plasticizing properties. Its respective boiling and melting points are 400 °C (lit.) and −48 °C. Its molar mass is 390.56, and its density is 0.986 g/mL at 25 °C (lit.).

Dioctyl Terephthalate (DOTP) is a preferred phthalate-free plasticizer used for PVC and is used instead of low-chain and ortho-phthalate plasticizers (owing to its great plasticizing properties) as it is a safe substitute owing to it being less toxic. Furthermore, DOTP is mainly used in the plastics industry since it is usually used for paints and varnishes.

In addition, with polyaniline (PANI)-ethyene dimethacrylate (EDMA) it can make a composite blend that can be used to fabricate conductive films, with polyvinyl chloride as a plasticizer (PVC) to form artificial intra-vessel plaque solutions. It is also employed in various other products and processes like manufacturing automotive plastic parts, high-temperature cables, injection moulding, rotational moulding, dip moulding, slush moulding and leatherette.

In the paper finishing industry, it is used in the calendaring process, in moulding, extrusion and for coating and ink applications, along with its patented use in hair care products for latex compositions. Ideally, it can be used in applications such as film & sheet, gaskets, O-rings, coated fabrics, wall coverings, automotive parts, flooring, and wire & cable. Other uses of the chemical boosting its market demand include in making flexible film, toys, PVC, bottle caps & closures, traffic cones, vinyl gloves, vinyl water stops and vinyl flooring.
