Its vapor pressure is measured around 1 mm Hg at 67.8 °C. It decomposes when heated at higher temperatures. It also decomposes when reacted with acid or acid fumes while emitting highly toxic fumes of cyanides. Ethyl Cyanoacetate emits oxides of carbon and nitrogen on heating. It hydrolyzes rapidly under neutral as well as alkaline conditions and gives cyanoacetic acid along with ethanol at the end.

It is the ethyl ester of cyanoacetic acid that has various commercial applications covering major sectors of the market. It is widely used in organic chemistry for preparing other chemical cyanides and other chemicals. It can be used for the synthesis of ethyl glyoxylate. The compound is considered a chemical reagent that can be included in the formulations to prepare pyrimidine and purine.
