Met Coke Production Cost Report

Met Coke or Metallurgical Coke (C) is a porous, fissured solid made from low sulphur bituminous coal and low ash that has unique coking abilities. It is made via carbonization of coals with specific rank or of coal blends in coke ovens at a high temperature of about around 1100 degrees C.

It is a porous carbon material that looks silver, black in colour and has high strength. It is made up of organic (C being the major component) as well as inorganic matter. The organic part also contains small amounts of nitrogen (N2), sulphur (S), hydrogen (H2) and oxygen (O2). Its chemical properties mainly consist of coke reactivity and coke alkali resistance, importantly, coke reactivity. The coke's inorganic matter is called coke ash (mineral matter) and is generally about 12% on a dry basis. It has a density of 1.80-1.95g/cm3 and a porosity of 35-55%.

Met Coke plays a crucial role in the ironmaking process, which is primarily driving its market demand. It is widely used across applications where products require a carbon of high quality, toughness and resilience. Combined with iron ore, and limestone ore, it is used in high-temperature furnaces to make iron and steel, as immense heat leads to the bonding of the material's chemical properties. In addition, Low Ash Metallurgical Coke (Met Coke) finds application in metallurgical and chemical industries that demand properties like high-temperature resistance and uniform heating which further the market growth.

It is extensively used in important industrial processes to produce pig iron, integrated steel plants, engineering goods, and industry/foundries producing ferro alloys, chemicals, zinc units, and soda ash, among others which are boosting its industry's development. Other uses include ammonia synthesis, gas production, etc., which in turn boosts the market expansion.
