This compound is soluble in water and can also dissolve in organic solvents like acetic acid, though it is poorly soluble in alcohols. It is hygroscopic and decomposes upon heating at higher temperatures, potentially releasing hazardous nickel compounds, but not nickel carbonyl as previously stated. Upon heating to around 250 °C, it loses its water of crystallization and decomposes into nickel oxide and other nickel compounds. Nickel Acetate is toxic and can cause skin and eye irritation upon direct exposure. It is classified as a human carcinogen and is poisonous if ingested. It remains stable at room temperature but can react with various chemicals to produce derivatives used in several applications.

In industrial contexts, Nickel Acetate is associated with electroplating, textiles, metals, and chemicals. It acts as a catalyst in the synthesis of nickel-based chemicals and is used in the preparation of polynuclear nickel polyoxotungstate cluster compounds for manufacturing molecular magnets. In the textile industry, it serves as a mordant and aids in dye preparation. Additionally, it's used in other commercial and chemical processes, including as a coating material for electroless nickel plating and in surface treatment processes, such as seal coatings on aluminum and anodizing processes.
