The compound thermally breaks down to trichloroacetic acid and hydrochloric acid when exposed to moisture. It is light sensitive and breaks down to phosgene and hydrochloric acid at a temperature above 150 °C in the presence of UV rays. It is a corrosive chemical that can corrode metals such as iron, zinc, and aluminium.
