The solid POM is then processed to convert hydroxyl groups into acetate groups through acetylation, followed by drying and storage.
Polyoxymethylene (POM), also known as acetal, is a highly crystalline thermoplastic characterized by its various physical and chemical properties. It has a density of 1.41 to 1.43 g/cm³. It has high tensile strength (up to 50.5 MPa) and stiffness, which makes it comparable to metals. POM has a melting point of 167 °C and maintains good dimensional stability with low water absorption (0.20%). It shows excellent resistance to hydrocarbons, alcohols, and weak alkalis while being less resistant to strong alkalis and oxidizing agents. Additionally, POM has excellent electrical insulation properties and a narrow processing temperature range, with decomposition occurring above 220 °C.
