Additionally, the study covers specific expenditures associated with setting up and operating a propionic acid production plant. These encompass manufacturing processes, raw material requirements, utility requirements, infrastructure needs, machinery and technology requirements, manpower requirements, packaging requirements, transportation requirements, and more.

Propionic or propanoic acid is an organic chemical compound that is widely used as a preservative for foods, grains, and animal feed. It is highly used in chemical, pharmaceutical as well as other industrial operations. It can be used in the preparations of agrochemicals and is considered a component in the production of herbicides.

It is often used in the production of fine chemical intermediates, emulsions, rubber chemicals, etc. It can also be utilized in the preparation of chemical solvents that are further used in the formulations of coating materials. Moreover, it is used in the production of chemicals, pharmaceutical drugs, etc. It can also be used in modified synthetic cellulose fibers such as cellulose acetate propionate.

The rising demand for propionic acid as a vital ingredient in preserving baked items like tortillas, bread, cheese, etc., contributes to its market expansion for the food & beverage industry. It is also utilized as an antibacterial and antifungal agent in livestock and agricultural functions, which further increases its demand for the agriculture and livestock industry.

Due to its anti-inflammatory properties, it is also used as an important constituent in the manufacture of certain pharmaceutical drugs, emulsions, herbicides, rubber chemicals, and other fine chemical intermediates, which contribute to its market expansion for pharmaceutical and chemical synthesis industries, respectively.

Modified synthetic cellulose fibers, such as cellulose acetate propionate, are some of the products synthesized from propionic acid, which is used in the textile industry. Moreover, the availability and cost of production of propionic acid’s feedstock (ethylene, ethanol, carbon monoxide), propionic acid market prices, distribution (including trading and shipping), logistics, etc., are some of the elements that influence an industrial propionic acid procurement.

Raw Material for Propionic Acid Production

According to the Propionic Acid manufacturing plant project report, the major raw materials for Propionic Acid production include Ethanol-Carbon Monoxide; Ethylene-Carbon Monooxide.

Manufacturing Process of Propionic Acid

The extensive Propionic Acid production cost report consists of this major industrial manufacturing process:

  • Production by the Larson Process: This method of production involves the reaction of ethanol and carbon monoxide in the presence of a catalyst, boron trifluoride and give propionic acid as the resultant product.
  • Production By Reppe Process: This method of producing of propionic acid is used for its large-scale production.  The synthesis starts with a chemical reaction between ethylene, carbon monoxide, and water at high temperature, that produces steam and propionic acid as the final product of the reaction.

Propionic Acid is a clear chemical liquid with a chemical formula CH3CH2COOH. It is a flammable liquid with a molecular weight of 74.08 g/mol. It is a colorless chemical with a strong rancid odor. It has a sour and mild cheese-like taste. Its melting and boiling points are measured approximately -21.5 °C and 141 °C, respectively. Its flash point is measured at approximately 52 °C, and has a high solubility in water and can be dissolved in other chemical solvents, including alcohols and ethers. It is miscible in ethanol, diethyl ether, and others. Similarly, it is slightly soluble in chloroform, as well.

Its density is 0.993 g/mL at a standard temperature of 25 °C. It is a highly flammable chemical liquid with a corrosive nature. Its autoignition temperature is 465 °C. It decomposes when heated at a high temperature and releases acrid smoke in the air. It contains short-chain saturated fatty acid consisting of ethane attached to a carboxy group.
