It is primarily used to create polyurethanes and is a colourless to pale yellow liquid with a strong, unpleasant odour. Via the phosphogenation of toluene, TDI is created. In the liquid-phase phosgenation process, toluene is first nitrated with nitric acid to form dinitrotoluene, which is then catalytically hydrogenated to yield toluene diamine (TDA). To create a crude TDI solution, TDA is first dissolved in an inert solvent and subjected to phosgene treatment. This crude TDI solution is fractionated to get rid of any unreacted phosgene, solvent, and hydrogen chloride before being vacuum-distilled.

The chemical formula of toluene diisocyanate is C9H6N202 and its molecular weight is 174.2 g/mol. The density of toluene diisocyanate is 1.214 g/cm3. The boiling point and melting point of toluene diisocyanate are 251 °C (484 °F: 524 K) and 21.8 °C (71.2 °F: 294.9 K) respectively. The Vapor pressure of toluene diisocyanate 0.01 mmHg (25°C).
