Frequently Asked Questions

Setting up an engineered wood manufacturing facility generally requires an investment of around USD 5 million to USD 120 million.

Engineered wood plants typically operate at capacities ranging from about 10,000 to 200,000 m³ per year of finished products.

The global engineered wood market is estimated at around USD 30 billion. Market demand is expanding at an estimated compound annual growth rate of approximately 5% to 9%.

Residential construction represents the largest end-use segment, accounting for about 61% of total demand. Commercial and institutional construction contributes roughly 25% to 30%, with the remaining demand coming from mass timber projects, flooring and interior applications, furniture and cabinetry, industrial packaging, and formwork.

Engineered wood production generally begins with kiln drying and strength grading of the timber, followed by defect removal and optimization. The material is then finger-jointed where required, coated with adhesive, assembled into panels or beams, pressed, CNC-machined to specification, inspected for quality, and prepared for shipment.

Major raw materials include kiln-dried softwood or hardwood lumber, veneers, wood strands, structural adhesives, and fillers. Lumber typically contributes around 50% to 70% of total raw material spending, while kiln drying can account for approximately 50% to 65% of overall plant energy consumption.

Core process equipment, including kiln dryers, grading equipment, optimizing saws, finger-jointing lines, adhesive systems, presses, CNC machining centers, and packaging lines, accounts for around 55% to 70% of total machinery cost.

Manufacturing costs are mainly driven by lumber prices. Other major cost factors include adhesive prices linked to petrochemical markets and energy costs associated with kiln drying and pressing.

Asia-Pacific is the leading region, supported by its large wood-panel manufacturing base, followed by Europe and North America. Asia accounts for around 31% of global wood-based panel production, Europe about 44% including EU and non-EU Europe, and North America around 9%. South America contributes about 5%.

Available grades include structural grade, appearance or architectural grade, and industrial or commodity grade. Structural products are manufactured according to applicable ANSI, EN, or CSA standards.

Manufacturing must comply with applicable structural standards, including ANSI/APA PRG 320 for CLT, ANSI A190.1 for glulam, and EN 16351 for CLT in Europe. Chain-of-custody forest certification may also be required. Tariff requirements vary by engineered wood product, HS classification, country of origin, and destination market.
