Frequently Asked Questions

Agricultural fungicides account for an estimated 55-65% of ziram demand, followed by rubber vulcanization accelerators at 20-25%. Adhesives, caulks, sealants, latex paints, paper and related preservative applications account for around 5-10%, while biocides, antimicrobial uses, and rabbit repellents represent the remaining 5-10%.

Ziram is produced by reacting dimethylamine with carbon disulfide to form N,N-dimethyl dithiocarbamic acid. The intermediate is treated with sodium hydroxide to form its sodium salt, which is then reacted with zinc sulfate to precipitate ziram for collection.

The main feedstocks are dimethylamine and carbon disulfide, with sodium hydroxide and zinc sulfate also required in the production process. Dimethylamine and carbon disulfide together account for around 65-75% of direct raw-material costs, while sodium hydroxide, zinc sulfate, and other process inputs account for the remaining 25-35%.

Dimethylamine and carbon disulfide prices are the main cost drivers, together accounting for an estimated 45-55% of total variable production costs. Other important factors include sodium hydroxide and zinc sulfate prices, energy consumption, plant utilization, product yield, drying and separation costs, labor, maintenance, quality control, waste treatment, environmental compliance, packaging, and transportation.

Ziram is mainly supplied as an agricultural fungicide in wettable powder, dry-flowable or water-dispersible formulations, with commercial products commonly containing around 75-76% active ingredients. For example, EPA records a 76% Ziram wettable powder, while other registered formulations include water-dispersible granules. Technical material is also supplied for industrial applications such as rubber processing.

Ziram should be stored in tightly closed containers in a cool, dry, well-ventilated area, away from incompatible materials and food or feed. It is classified under GHS as harmful if swallowed, toxic by inhalation, a skin sensitizer, capable of causing serious eye damage, and very toxic to aquatic life with long-lasting effects. Manufacturing therefore requires controlled handling, worker protection, emission and wastewater management, hazardous-waste controls, and applicable pesticide, chemical-safety, and environmental permits. Specific transport classifications should be confirmed from the applicable jurisdiction and product SDS rather than assigned universally.
