1,4-dimethylbenzene prices started trending upward in the fourth quarter of 2020, supported by growing upstream oil prices and keeping their spread over naphtha constant. Supply became more constrained and spot cargo availability was restricted in January as a result of a shift in supply-demand fundamentals brought on by a number of plant closures and less supply committed to term contracts as a result of lower planned production rates for the year.

After trade resumed following the Lunar New Year holidays, the bullishness grew even stronger as an upward trajectory was seen in most oil and petrochemicals markets.

Aromatic hydrocarbons include 1,4-dimethylbenzene, often known as p-xylene or para-xylene. The isomer 1,4-dimethylbenzene is one of three dimethyl benzene isomers known as xylenes. The p- or para- signifies that the two methyl groups in p-xylene or 1,4-dimethylbenzene are in diametrically opposing substituent positions, namely 1 and 4. It differs from the other isomers, o-xylene and m-xylene, in the locations of its two methyl groups. The isomers of xylene are all colourless and extremely combustible.
