1,4-Dimethylbenzene Procurement Reports

Crude oil had been trending upward during the first quarter of 2022 due to geopolitical considerations. Toluene is one of the key raw materials used in the production of 1,4-dimethylbenzene. Toluene's prices surged sharply during the first quarter of 2022, owing to the cost increase. 1,4-dimethylbenzene prices followed a similar trend. Some refineries had lowered the load as a result of rising costs.

Since the middle of the year 2021, the impact of domestic public health events had also worsened, affecting logistics and transportation in many places, enterprise shipment was already halted, the price of gasoline and diesel had also dropped dramatically, downstream device parking was already imposed, prices were low, and operators' mentality had also changed.

In terms of the foreign market, the price of toluene in Asia has increased significantly in March 2022. Imports from South Korea cost 1060 USD/MT on March 28th, up 116 USD/MT, or 12.29%.

1,4-dimethylbenzene prices started trending upward in the fourth quarter of 2020, supported by growing upstream oil prices and keeping their spread over naphtha constant. Supply became more constrained and spot cargo availability was restricted in January as a result of a shift in supply-demand fundamentals brought on by a number of plant closures and less supply committed to term contracts as a result of lower planned production rates for the year.

After trade resumed following the Lunar New Year holidays, the bullishness grew even stronger as an upward trajectory was seen in most oil and petrochemicals markets.

About 1,4-Dimethylbenzene:

Aromatic hydrocarbons include 1,4-dimethylbenzene, often known as p-xylene or para-xylene. The isomer 1,4-dimethylbenzene is one of three dimethyl benzene isomers known as xylenes. The p- or para- signifies that the two methyl groups in p-xylene or 1,4-dimethylbenzene are in diametrically opposing substituent positions, namely 1 and 4. It differs from the other isomers, o-xylene and m-xylene, in the locations of its two methyl groups. The isomers of xylene are all colourless and extremely combustible.

Chemical Formula:

  • C8H10

Synonyms:

  • Para-Xylene
  • 106-42-3
  • 1,4-Xylene
  • p-Methyltoluene
  • p-Dimethylbenzene

Molecular Weight:

  • 106.16 g/mol

Industrial Uses:

  • Plastics
  • Textiles

Production Processes:

  • Production of 1,4-Dimethylbenzene from Naphtha via Catalytic Reforming

The catalytic reforming of naphtha occurs throughout this phase. The formation of 1,4-dimethylbenzene is achieved through a succession of distillation, adsorption or crystallisation, and reaction processes involving m-xylene, o-xylene, and ethylbenzene.
