Bio-Ethanol Price Trend for the Second Half of 2023

Asia

The bullish run of bioethanol in Asian countries in Q3 of 2023 was caused by the expansion of the spending budget of the consumers and rising awareness amid the consumer sector. Another factor that established the grounds for a hike in bioethanol prices in this phase was the increasing number of government initiatives in this sector.

In the previous quarter, the region suffered from the export reduction from Saudi and other regions under OPEC+ regulations, and thus, the search for alternatives helped in the rise in the bioethanol price trend. However, the winds turned unfavorable in the fourth quarter as, under the influence of limited sugarcane production, the fate of the bioethanol market hung in uncertainty.

Europe

The bearish trail in the bioethanol price trend was an ill consequence of the uncertain rise in energy prices and a subsequent incline in production prices. Also, after facing several challenges in the third quarter, the traders opted for destocking practices in the fourth quarter. Additionally, the rising pressure of inclining inventory levels and inflationary pressure strained the market momentum further, and as a result, the bioethanol price trend moved southward.

North America

The bioethanol prices in North America stabilized in the third quarter as the downstream demand supported the struggling market dynamics. The volatility in the corn market and surge in gasoline prices posed a roadblock in the upward journey of bioethanol prices during the third quarter, but the market remained stagnant.

Even in the fourth quarter, the rise in production costs and rate of interest from the banking sector indicated economic turmoil in the sector, but the consumer interest and uptick movement in the biofuel sector helped the bioethanol price trend to achieve a steady state.

Analyst Insight

According to Procurement Resource, the price trend of Bio-Ethanol is expected to be driven by the rising downstream demand and uncertain cost of production.

Bio-Ethanol Price Trend for the First Half of 2023

Asia

Bioethanol prices observed a rising trend in the Asian region in the said period of 2023. The demands were high as major countries like India and China are increasingly trying to shift dependencies to biofuels in order to reduce their carbon footprints. India has set an ambitious target of blending 20% bioethanol with fuel by 2025. Further, the enhanced upstream costs, given the rising feedstock prices, impacted the price trend for Bioethanol.

The prices for Bioethanol relied heavily on that of feedstock corn, sugarcane, and wheat. Corn prices rose as typhoons and floods hampered the production quantities amid already shrinking acreage. The sugarcane prices were also at record highs. Hence, the prices of Bioethanol remained high, swinging amidst high upstream costs and rising market offtakes.

Europe

The European markets are import-dependent on Bioethanol and its feedstock materials. After Russian and Ukrainian exports were absent, record-high inflation was observed in the European market. Hence, the expensive imports amid considerable downstream demands and port congestions caused the bioethanol prices to incline in the region.

North America

The North American market for Bioethanol replicated the global rising price trend. Because of the rising demand for biofuels, the demand for Bioethanol rose considerably. Further, the active rise in prices of agricultural producers, given the severe weather conditions and shrinking acreage, contributed to the high prices of Bioethanol.

Analyst Insight

According to the Procurement Resource, bioethanol prices are expected to continue the rising trajectory given the rising demand for biofuels as more countries try to cope with the carbon emission goals.

Bioethanol Price Trend for the Second Half of 2022

Asia

The Asia Pacific market of Bioethanol fluctuated in the third and fourth quarters of 2022. The prices were influenced by the uncertainties in the demand and availability of feedstock in the region. The Indian market showcased an upward trend as the government promoted the use of ethanol-based fuels, and thus, the demand for the commodity increased there. However, in China, the prices were unstable due to low demand from the downstream sector and reduced imports.

In the fourth quarter, the rate of covid infections rose in China, and as a result, the region's economy declined. Due to the disrupted production rates, a surge in energy production costs, and restricted trade activities, the prices of Bioethanol stabilized at the end months of the fourth quarter.

Europe

The price trend for Bioethanol followed a downward trajectory as the prices in this region were highly influenced by the rising inflationary rates and disruption in trade practices due to multiple strikes in the labor market. The prices of feedstock materials such as corn and sugarcane fell along with the piling up of the stocks at the ports due to delays in shipments.

Additionally, the pharmaceutical and cosmetic market also presented weak demand and supported the falling prices of Bioethanol in the third quarter. In the fourth quarter, the prices trend surged as the demand for eco-friendly fuel sources increased due to the rising energy production costs. Also, with high inflation rates raising production costs, the price trend for Bioethanol inclined in Europe.

North America

In North America, the prices of Bioethanol were turbulent throughout the third and fourth quarters of 2022. The bioethanol market was significantly affected by the rise in the prices of corn and sugarcane in the third quarter. In addition to that, the demand from the pharmaceutical and fuel sectors also remained strong.

The rise in the prices was also supported by international demand for Bioethanol. However, the traders witnessed fewer inquiries in the domestic region. This trend was supported by high demand for fuel sources and rising inflation rates in the fourth quarter, but towards the last months, the prices of Bioethanol began to fall as inventories rose due to high production rates.

Analyst Insight

According to Procurement Resource, the prices of Bioethanol are estimated to follow a stable trend in the coming quarter. Bioethanol prices will be influenced by the rising need for environment-friendly fuels amid the energy crisis and high demand from the pharmaceutical and related sectors.

Bioethanol Price Trend For the First Half of 2022

Asia

The price trend of Bioethanol remained inflated in the Asian market throughout the first quarter due to the soaring costs of feedstock corn, sugarcane, and wheat. The Russian-Ukrainian war had a profound impact on food prices, making the world more vulnerable to food insecurity. The prices of feedstock corn averaged 365.23 USD/MT towards the end of the first quarter. The high feedstock prices, along with the robust demand from downstream pharmaceuticals, cosmetic and biofuel industries, stretched the prices of Bioethanol further, averaging 1175 USD/MT.

During the start of the second quarter, the prices declined momentarily owing to the zero-tolerance covid restrictions placed by the Chinese government. The market sentiment weakened with the reduced production activities and increased freight charges. However, despite the relaxed prices of feedstocks, bioethanol prices remained anchored in the Chinese domestic market, averaging 1140 USD/MT Ex-Shanghai, China.

Europe

Bioethanol prices exhibited an upward trajectory throughout the year's first half. The prices of corn reached an all-time high owing to the Russian invasion and the adverse weather conditions. The economic pressure and supply shortages amid the increasing demand from end-user industries triggered the prices of Bioethanol to inflate.

The lack of valuable imports from the USA and Brazil ( bad corn harvest due to droughts and La Nina ) tightened the already constricted supply chain. The prices of Bio-Ethanol went from 1055 USD/MT (first quarter) to 1075 USD/MT FOB Hamburg towards the end of the second quarter.

North America

The US domestic market exhibited the same price trend as the global outlook. The high feedstock corn prices due to drought and surging transportation charges amid labour shortages caused the prices of Bioethanol to soar throughout the first half of the said year. The corn prices averaged 248.82 USD/MT causing the bioethanol prices to reach 775-870 USD/MT FOB Texas during the first quarter. Though the corn prices relaxed slightly in the second quarter averaging 215.35 USD/MT, Bio-Ethanol prices remained anchored due to the booming market sentiment.
