Methacrylic Acid Price Trend

MAA varied across the United States throughout the quarter, owing to the fact that demand supply fundamentals varied each month. Despite subdued demand from the downstream derivatives industry, prices remained robust in October due to rising input costs, but then decreased in November due to tight supply restrictions. However, MAA prices increased significantly in December as a result of a resurgence in input costs, resulting in general inflationary pressure across the North American market. However, marginal profitability remained a serious worry for North American converters. The MAA price was reported to be hovering around 2340 USD/MT FOB in October.

About Methacrylic Acid:

Methacrylic Acid (MAA) is an organic compound. It is a colourless, viscous liquid with an acrid unpleasant odour. It is miscible with most organic solvents and is soluble in water if it’s warm. Methacrylic Acid is industrially prepared on a large scale as a precursor to its esters, especially methyl methacrylate (MMA) and poly-MMA. Methacrylic Acid has numerous industrial uses, out of which, paints and adhesives are the most common ones. One natural source of MAA is Roman chamomile or whig plant.

Chemical Formula:

  • C4H6O2

Synonyms:

  • 79-41-4
  • 2-Methylacrylic acid
  • 2-Methyl-2-propenoic acid
  • Methacrylic acid

Molecular Weight:

  • 86.09g/mol

Industrial Uses:

  • Nail primers
  • Paints
  • Adhesives
  • Ion-exchange resins
  • Leather treatment agents
  • Rubber modifier
  • Sealants
  • Paper processing agent
  • Textiles

Production Processes:

  • Production of Methacrylic Acid via Oxidation of Isobutylene or tert-Butanol; via Isobutane; via •    Acetone Cyanohydrin, and via Dehydrogenation of Isobutyric Acid

In the most common route, acetone cyanohydrin is utilised as a starting product, which is turned into methacrylamide sulphate in the presence of sulphuric acid. Then, the obtained methacrylamide sulphate is hydrolysed to obtain Methacrylic Acid (MAA). The methacrylamide sulphate can also be esterified to obtain methyl methacrylate (MMA).
