Asia

In the second half of 2025, formaldehyde prices in Asia moved in a mixed yet mostly weak direction. The market was influenced strongly by changes in methanol costs, which stayed volatile due to plant shutdowns, supply disruptions, and fluctuating natural gas prices. During some months, supply tightness supported prices, but this support did not last long. Demand from key downstream sectors such as resins, plywood, and furniture was uneven. While some restocking activity was seen earlier, buyers later became cautious due to economic uncertainty and export pressure. In several Asian markets, imports remained available, which limited any sharp price rise. Overall, the market lacked steady demand, and prices struggled to sustain gains toward the end of the said period.

Europe

In Europe, formaldehyde prices during H2’25 stayed under pressure. Weak construction activity across major economies reduced consumption from wood panels, insulation, and furniture industries. Buyers focused on controlling inventories rather than fresh purchases. Feedstock methanol availability improved, which eased cost pressure for producers. At the same time, high energy costs and slow industrial recovery kept producers cautious. Trade conditions improved slightly, but exports remained limited due to soft global demand. As a result, prices followed a stable to downward trend, with limited signs of recovery during the second half of the year.

North America

In North America, formaldehyde prices declined during H2’25, especially toward the end of the year. Falling methanol costs provided strong cost relief due to high import volumes and rising port inventories. Demand remained weak as construction activity slowed and buyers reduced purchases through year-end destocking. Economic concerns, including lower business confidence and tighter monetary conditions, further reduced buying interest. These factors together kept prices under pressure through the said quarter.

About Formaldehyde

Formaldehyde in appearance is basically a colourless gas that is prepared from methanol. It is utilised as an antiseptic, disinfectant, and general-purpose chemical reagent for laboratory applications. It has a pungent odour. It is a chemical compound that is readily miscible in water and gets distributed as a 37% solution in water; formalin, a 10% solution of formaldehyde in water, is utilised as a disinfectant and to preserve biological specimens.

Formaldehyde Production Processes

  • Production of Formaldehyde via Methanol; via Methane; and via Formox Process

To produce Formaldehyde from methanol, a procedure known as catalytic oxidation is performed. In this process, methanol is oxidised in the presence of a catalyst like silver metal or a mixture of an iron and vanadium oxides to finally obtain Formaldehyde.
