Asia
In the second half of 2025, the Asian propanal market experienced fluctuations in price movements. At the beginning of the period, the market faced a decline in the price of propanal due to the decrease in the price of propylene, which led to a fall in the costs of manufacturers. The buyers, including coatings, solvents, and chemicals, remained guarded due to the low margin, which led to a decrease in the purchases of the product in large quantities. In the latter part of the period, the market experienced an increase in the price of propanal due to the improved demand from the industrial segment, but the increases were minor. At the end of the period, the price of propanal remained stable in a narrow range due to the balance in the market.
Europe
In Europe, propanal markets exhibited similar trends to those in Asia. Prices here also started lower, largely due to a steady supply and controlled demand from industries such as pharmaceuticals, personal care, and industrial solvents. Raw material costs were stable, hence providing a minimal upward influence on prices. However, adjustments during the mid-period and demand during this time ensured prices did not continue to dip. At the close of H2, markets exhibited mild stabilization, with minimal volatility and a balanced market.
North America
In the North American region, the prices of propanal were on an upward trajectory, albeit at a slow pace. At the beginning of the period, the prices were low due to the availability of the product and moderate downstream demand. Maintenance activities at some plants contributed to an increase in prices, but this was on a temporary basis. The major downstream industries were consuming the product at regular intervals without any stockpiling. At the end of H2, the prices were stable at a narrow range.
Analyst Insight
According to Procurement Resource, Propanal prices are expected to remain stable, with slight upward pressure if industrial demand increased or feedstock costs rose.

Asia
In the first half of 2025, the propanal market in Asia showed a generally soft and unstable pattern. The year began with reduced demand from key downstream industries such as coatings and plasticizers, which kept buying activity low. Supply in the region increased due to new production facilities coming online, especially in China, which contributed to an oversupplied market.
Although colder weather in January briefly supported demand, this was short-lived. Market conditions remained under pressure through most of the period, with limited improvement even when there were cost hikes in related chemicals around March. By April, demand remained weak, and production costs eased again, causing prices to stay on the lower side with no strong recovery.
Europe
In Europe, propanal prices stayed mostly stable but leaned slightly downward during the first half of 2025. The continent entered the year with comfortable inventory levels, and mild winter temperatures reduced energy and industrial usage. Economic activity stayed sluggish, and many downstream industries ran at reduced rates, keeping demand for propanal limited. While there were some delays in international shipments, the overall supply in the region remained steady. A stronger regional currency during parts of the period made imported materials more affordable, but this did not result in higher demand. Market participants remained cautious throughout the period due to the lack of clear growth signals.
North America
Propanal prices in North America experienced more ups and downs than in other regions. Early in the year, a major winter storm boosted energy needs, temporarily tightening supply conditions and pushing prices up. However, strong export volumes quickly reduced domestic availability, adding to price volatility. As winter demand eased, production improved, but inventory levels remained lower than usual. Infrastructure challenges and steady outbound shipments limited price drops in the early months. By the second quarter, increased production and expansion plans helped improve supply conditions, but demand from sectors such as coatings and solvents stayed weak, keeping prices from rising significantly.
Propanal is a clear, colourless liquid with a pungent fruity odour. It belongs to the family of aldehyde. It is less dense than water, and its vapours are heavier than air. Its flashpoint is about 15°F. It is widely used in the production of plastics as well as synthesis of rubber chemicals. It can also be utilised as a disinfectant.

In this process, ethylene is used as the starting material. Ethylene is hydroformylated using carbon monoxide and hydrogen in the presence of a catalyst such as rhodium, which results in the formation of Propanal.
