Propanal Price Trend

Propionaldehyde is made via hydroformylation of ethylene with carbon monoxide and hydrogen in the presence of a catalyst like cobalt octacarbonyl or a rhodium complex in the oxo process. During the early half of Q4 FY21, the European ethylene market was hampered by supply shortages and rising freight costs. Imports from North America were quoted at a higher price than the previous quarter, with average ethylene prices in North-West Europe estimated at 1355 USD/MT FD Hamburg, up 10 USD/Mt from the previous quarter's average. The downstream polymers industry, such as polyethylene and polyvinyl chloride, had a little increase in demand compared to Q3, while demand from most end user industries tapered down in December. Propanol's use in different cosmetics and personal care applications boosted the market in the fourth quarter of 2021, thanks to the growing cosmetics sector. The chemical is also used to make propyl halide, propyl amines, propyl acetate, and glycol ethers, among other compounds. Because of the broad expansion of the pharmaceutical business in many locations, demand for propanol surged dramatically in the year 2021. In terms of production and demand, Asia Pacific dominates the propanol market.

About Propanal:

Propanal is a clear, colourless liquid with a pungent fruity odour. It belongs to the family of aldehyde. It is less dense than water, and its vapours are heavier than air. Its flashpoint is about 15°F. It is widely used in the production of plastics as well as synthesis of rubber chemicals. It can also be utilised as a disinfectant.

Chemical Formula of Propanol

  • C3H6

  • 123-38-6
  • Propionaldehyde
  • Methylacetaldehyde
  • Propionic aldehyde
  • Propaldehyde

Molecular Weight

  • 58.08 g/mol

Industrial Uses

  • Intermediates
  • Alkyd resins
  • Chemical Synthesis
  • Odour agents
  • Plastics
  • Disinfectant

Production Processes

  • Production of Propanal via Catalytic Hydroformylation; and via Oxidation of 1-Propanol

In this process, ethylene is used as the starting material. Ethylene is hydroformylated using carbon monoxide and hydrogen in the presence of a catalyst such as rhodium, which results in the formation of Propanal.
