Resorcinol prices showed a mixed-to-soft trend across H2’25, with firmer conditions in Q3 giving way to broader weakness in Q4 as upstream support weakened.
Feedstock pressure intensified in Q4, with Chinese benzene prices declining by around 4.2% from October to December amid oversupply and weaker derivative economics.
Downstream demand remained cautious as derivative margins compressed, operating rates weakened and buyers adopted conservative procurement strategies across major markets.

Asia

Resorcinol prices initially gained support from fluctuating upstream conditions in Q3, as firmer crude oil benchmarks, stronger styrene margins and temporary supply tightening encouraged renewed buying. However, the market weakened in Q4 as oversupply intensified and aromatics production margins deteriorated. Lower operating rates across styrene, phenol, acetone and caprolactam chains reduced derivative consumption and limited purchasing interest. In India, increasing feedstock availability and weaker demand from packaging, chemical synthesis and nylon-intermediate sectors further pressured market sentiment. Conservative procurement and adequate inventories kept buyers focused on minimal purchasing.

Europe

Resorcinol prices followed a fluctuating trajectory before turning softer in Q4. During Q3, firmer crude oil and healthier export margins triggered moderate restocking, although restrained demand from styrene, phenol and caprolactam producers limited the upside. Conditions weakened further in Q4 as ample feedstock availability and subdued downstream consumption increased pressure on the market. High pyrolysis gasoline and reformate deliveries supported elevated extraction rates, while disappointing polyamide 6 packaging demand and moderate caprolactam utilization restricted consumption. Elevated electricity and natural-gas costs also compressed derivative economics, while just-in-time purchasing reduced replenishment activity.

North America

Resorcinol prices initially softened amid comfortable supply and moderate demand before receiving temporary support from higher crude oil values and planned refinery turnarounds that constrained regional availability. The improvement faded in Q4 as weaker crude oil conditions reduced upstream cost support and compressed derivative margins. Demand from packaging, chemical intermediates and specialty applications remained cautious, while moderate operating rates limited consumption. Year-end restocking provided some stabilization, but buyers continued prioritizing contractual requirements over spot transactions.

Resorcinol Production Processes

This process of synthesis of resorcinol is a multi-step approach. The first step in the process is the dialkylation of propylene and benzene, which yields 1,3-diisopropyl benzene. The ultimate products, resorcinol, and acetone, are obtained by oxidizing the resulting product in the presence of oxygen during a Hock rearrangement reaction.
