Dicyclopentadiene and acetic acid are employed as the starting materials for the production of verdyl acetate. Acetic acid prices in Europe spiked in October and November before beginning to fall in December. In October and November, Germany's rates were 1805 USD/MT 1845 USD/MT DDP Hamburg, respectively. Acetic Acid prices have increased to multi-month and multi-year highs across Europe as a result of a worldwide supply shortage. Manufacturers of rubber and plastic products felt the squeeze as raw materials were in short supply. The issue was made much more challenging by long transportation periods and restricted freight capacity. The supply chain was still in peril, with reduced container availability and rising freight costs. In December, low demand and enough supply caused the price to fall to 1824 USD/MT DDP Hamburg. As a result, this price volatility of the raw materials affected verdyl acetate prices as well.

About Verdyl Acetate

Verdyl Acetate is a colourless to pale yellow clear liquid. In terms of organoleptic note, it is considered green and woody with sweet anisic note. It is insoluble in water whereas it shows good solubility in oils and organic solvents. Upon its addition, Verdyl Acetate imparts floral accords to a product along with an attractive green fruity volume and a sweet anise and wood background.

Production Process:

  • Production of Verdyl Acetate via chemical synthesis.

In this process, acetic acid and high chloride-phosphoric acid are added in specific quantities. Then, acetic anhydride is added to this mixture at a temperature of about 580C, followed by a slow addition of dicyclopentadiene while stirring the mixture and maintaining the reaction temperature at 50-800C. After completion of the reaction, the products are washed with NaOH solution and others, with a subsequent vacuum fractionation, thus obtaining Verdyl Acetate as the result.
