Market Trends of Dolomite

This blog provides detailed information about Dolomite, including its classification, manufacturing process, industrial usage, price trends, and important players in the market.

Dolomite: Definition

Dolomite covers about two percent of the Earth’s crust, together with calcite and aragonite. The majority part of the dolomite consists of dolostone formations that appear as thick units of absolute areal extent in several sequences of essentially marine strata. Additionally, several geologists refer to the rock dolostone by the mineral name of dolomite. One of the best examples is the Dolomite Alps of northern Italy. The other comparatively regular occurrences of mineral dolomite are in dolomite marble and dolomite-rice veins.

Moreover, it was also found in the rare igneous rock called dolomite carbonatite. The crystals of appear either to be colourless or white, buff-coloured, and bluish. Also, the granular form of dolomite found in rocks appears to be light to dark gray, tan, or white in colour.

Dolomite Production Process

The production process of dolomite consists of grinding a dry and low impurity level mineral dolomite. The grinding process is conducted under dry settings in any equipment that is competent in offering the required grain size. After grinding, the additives are incorporated chosen from the group comprising iron and magnesium hydroxide, calcium hydroxide, or a blend of both to react and combine dolomite impurities as the needed silica, iron, and alumina in the dolomite. The price fluctuations of the additives also impact the dolomite production cost.

As a next step, the additives are blended with the formerly ground dolomite in a similar way. This activity of the process may be conducted in any mixer that delivers an efficient homogenization of the components, hence providing an appropriate distribution for better sintering. It is a distinctive process of compressing the blended materials, conducted in a briquetting apparatus in which the fine mixture of materials is filled in the existence of water to make briquettes of heavy mass and an adequate solidity to sustain treatment in the upcoming stage of the procedure.

These briquettes in the shape of nuts or pillows of compressed material are sieved to eradicate minute particles and lesser hard material that later gets recycled to the briquette machine. Following this step, the briquettes are burnt at a temperature of 1,700 to 2,200 degrees to ensure overall sintering. Once the sintering of the dolomite in the form of briquettes is done, it is cooled under air with low moisture content. After the cooling step is over, the dolomite briquettes are strained into distinct sections to be stored individually.

Industrial Uses of Dolomite

A large volume of dolomite manufactured globally is used in the production of iron and steel. The powder form of dolomite is employed as a slag flux in manufacturing metal alloys. Due to the rich properties of dolomite, such as its high-density ratio and high surface solidity, it is used as a filler.

The productive elements of dolomite, like lime and magnesia, make dolomite powder extremely useful in the glass industry. In addition, dolomite supports enhancing the volume of rubber and modifying the softness and hardness of produced rubber. Moreover, there are twofold advantages of dolomite powder in the agricultural sector. While it assists in maintaining the pH balance in soils that are acidic, it also helps in the form of fertilizer in soils that are deficient in magnesium content.

Dolomite Prices: Market Trend and Forecast

North America

The dolomite market in North America is witnessing great prospects to grow due to the existence of several domestic mines throughout the region, specifically in the United States. The maximum volume of mined dolomite is procured for domestic construction activities and other applications.

The commercial and residential construction market activities, public infrastructure, and other kinds of construction projects support the expansion of the market, particularly in the United States and Canada. However, the North American dolomite market faced a substantial interruption in production which had a negative impact on the demand for the dolomite market. The dolomite price trend in the regional market has been affected because of the disruption in the supply chain with restrained operational proficiencies.

Asia Pacific

Asia Pacific-based countries like India, China, Japan, South Korea, and Australia are observing a rise in industrialization and urbanization endeavors. The fast development of industrialization is thrusting investments in transport infrastructure activities.

In addition, an increase in refractory production is driving the demand for dolomite in the iron and steel sectors in Asia Pacific. The main producer and consumer of refractories in the region is China. The expanding refractory industry in China is expected to provide several development prospects for the Dolomite market participants in the Asia Pacific region.

Europe

Europe comprises numerous developed countries, including Germany, Russia, France, the UK, and Italy. Increasing investments in the construction sector and a broad range of applications of dolomite in the agriculture, animal feed, and glass and ceramics sectors are propelling the expansion of the market in Europe, which in turn impacts the dolomite price within the region.

Over 70 percent of the European Union’s investments in Germany, France, the UK, Italy, and Spain are done by constructing buildings and other structures. Besides, about 51 percent of the total investments of the European Union are in the residential sector. Hence, the growth of the construction sector is surging the demand for dolomite in the region.
