Patchouli oil prices rose in Q3 2026 as Indonesian origin markets, the largest supplier of global patchouli oil, recovered from the lows seen at the beginning of the year. The rebound began in July, when persistent drought and fears of a strong El Niño raised concerns about leaf yields and distillation yields, leading to a rapid reassessment of prices at the source. Supply was further constrained by Indonesia's new BPAP export certification requirement, which slowed shipments and reduced the amount of oil reaching international buyers. Farmers held back sales following poor harvests earlier in the year, exacerbating the shortage at the buyer level. Prices in Aceh continued to rise through September, remaining highly volatile, coinciding with the usual seasonal recovery in the second half of the year. Trade data confirmed the price-driven nature of the market, as Indonesia's export earnings from patchouli oil were due more to higher selling prices than to an expansion of the cultivated area. For fragrance buyers in North America and Europe, this meant higher purchase costs and slower deliveries, although a wide range of qualities—including less expensive oils that differed in composition from premium grades—offered some relief.
