During the Gastech 2023 event in Singapore, the Singapore-based Global Centre for Maritime Decarbonisation (GCMD) and the Society for Gas as a Marine Fuel (SGMF) inked a two-year pact to devise standards for ammonia's use as marine fuel. Although specific timelines for these proposed standards were undisclosed, this collaboration follows a nine-month safety study on ammonia bunkering that concluded in April. This research, carried out by GCMD with DNV Maritime Advisory and backed by Surbana Jurong and the Singapore Maritime Academy at the Singapore Polytechnic, offered insights into the precautions essential for safe ammonia bunkering based on industry feedback.

The partnership between GCMD and SGMF is viewed as a stride towards Singapore's ambition to reduce carbon emissions in the marine sector. GCMD's CEO, Lynn Loo, emphasized the necessity to establish an environment conducive to ammonia bunkering, even though ammonia vessels aren't anticipated until 2026. She stressed the importance of having guidelines set in advance, although she did not elaborate further on the matter.
