Baker Hughes to be the technology provider for the Blue Point Number One Ammonia Project
Baker Hughes, an energy technology company, recently announced (October 27, 2025) that it has received an award from Technip Energies to supply a steam turbine generator and critical centrifugal compression equipment for the Blue Point Number One Ammonia Project in Modeste, Louisiana. This facility, which is a joint venture between CF Industries, Mitsui & Co., and JERA, is poised to become the world's largest low-carbon ammonia plant with an annual capacity of approximately 1.4 million metric tons. The order for this equipment was officially booked in the third quarter of 2025.
The technology provided by Baker Hughes will enable the project to produce blue ammonia using an autothermal reforming (ATR) process integrated with a carbon capture and storage (CCS) system. This system is designed to sequester up to 2.3 million metric tons of carbon dioxide each year. The company's specific scope of supply includes a comprehensive set of compressors—an ammonia compressor, a syngas compressor, a recycle compressor, and a CO2 compressor—which will transport the captured CO2 via pipeline for geological storage, alongside a steam turbine-driven power generation unit.

Ammonia is increasingly recognized for its potential as a low-carbon energy source, vital for achieving decarbonization in hard-to-abate sectors such as agriculture, power generation, and marine fuel. Baker Hughes leverages its differentiated technology portfolio to provide integrated solutions that meet the demanding requirements of such complex, large-scale projects. Alessandro Bresciani, senior vice president of Energy Equipment at Baker Hughes, stated, “Ammonia, as a lower-carbon energy source, is poised to play a pivotal role in enabling and accelerating global sustainable energy development," adding that the company is proud to support its scaling with proven technology.
The ATR-based ammonia production facility will be constructed at CF Industries’ existing Blue Point Complex in Louisiana. The project is designed to permanently store its captured CO2 in a Class VI well. Construction on the new plant is scheduled to commence in 2026, with the commencement of low-carbon ammonia production targeted for 2029.
