Toray plans to enter the battery separator market

Toray Advanced Materials Korea Inc. (TAK), a South Korean Chemical company, is planning to enter the battery separator market with the objective of expanding its business in the upcoming days. As per Kedglobal media, the company aims to acquire the Toray Battery Separator Film Korea, a Korean company that is known for its separators that are used in batteries. On Thursday, the company announced the accession of 70% of the stakes of Toray BSF Korea, currently running under the Toray Industries of Japan.
Toray BSF Korea, which is in Gumi, North Gyeongsang Province, is a specialized manufacturer of separators that are used in batteries. Separators are a core production base for Toray BSF Korea. The company also dispenses a divergent production line for electric vehicles, electronic devices, industrial components, energy storage, etc. The company supplies separators to various battery manufacturers internationally and domestically.
On the other hand, Toray Materials is a South Korean-based producer of chemical and technology products. It enlists a range of advanced materials related to electric vehicles and next-generation mobility, including specialty films used for multilayer ceramic capacitors (MLCCs), which are further used in EVs. It also produces aramid that is used for motor insulation and nonwoven fabrics for EV sound absorption.
The company has announced to amplify its polyphenylene sulfide (PPS) resin production capacity to up to 5000 tons. TAK has aimed to attain a total annual capacity of 13,600 tons, placing the expansion at the Gunsan plant located in Saemangeum Industrial Complex, which is set to be completed by 2024. It will also direct to increase its capacity for commercial chemicals such as sodium sulfide, which is the main raw material used for the PPS resin, to 4800 tonnes per year.
According to Procurement Resource, Toray Advanced Materials Korea (TAK), a South Korean company that specializes in manufacturing separators for batteries, has aimed to enter the battery separator business market. The company has already signed an agreement acquiring 70% of the Toray BSF Korea company, which is currently running under Toray Industries of Japan. With this major expansion vision, the company plans to increase its production capacity to fulfill the growing demands while strengthening its market presence.
