Sulzer's mass transfer technology is being utilized in a joint effort by Messer, a specialist in industrial gases, and an unnamed inorganic chemicals manufacturer for a carbon capture and utilization project at a facility in Landeck, Austria. The collaboration aims to capture over 50,000 tons per year of CO2 at the plant, with plans to repurpose the captured gas for use in the food and beverage industry, as well as by other local businesses.
The project focuses on transforming carbon emissions from calcium carbide production into a resourceful input for various industries. To achieve this, the partners have selected OASE® blue technology from BASF for flue gas and post-combustion CO2 capture. Sulzer Chemtech's carbon capture products are integral to this technology, designed to cater to the unique demands of carbon capture processes. These products are noted for their high CO2 capture rates and energy efficiency.
Uwe Boltersdorf, President of Sulzer Chemtech Division, expressed the company's commitment to customer competitiveness, sustainability, and efficient practices. Sulzer's range of mass transfer components is highlighted as a tool enabling global businesses to adopt greener practices.
Dr. Tarek El Hawary, CTO of Messer SE & Co. KGaA, emphasized the synergy between plant engineering expertise, BASF's OASE® Blue technology, and Sulzer Chemtech's products. He remarked that this powerful technological network supports Messer's production of eco-friendly and economical products, transforming CO2 into a reusable asset.
According to the article by Procurement Resource, Messer is collaborating with an industrial chemical manufacturer using Sulzer’s technology to capture 50,000 tons of CO2 annually in Austria for reuse in food, beverages, and other industries. This initiative, featuring BASF's OASE® blue for efficient CO2 capture, highlights Sulzer's commitment to sustainable practices and Messer's aim to produce eco-friendly products by converting carbon emissions into valuable resources, as explained by Sulzer and Messer executives.
