Neste Corporation (Neste) has made significant strides in chemical recycling by completing a series of industrial-scale processing runs with increasing quantities of liquefied waste plastic at its Porvoo refinery in Finland. In the latter half of 2023, these runs effectively doubled Neste's total processed liquefied waste plastic to over 6,000 tons, with a record single run exceeding 2,000 tons. The outcome of these runs is high-quality, ISCC PLUS certified material suitable for creating new plastics.

Heikki Färkkilä, Vice-President of Chemical Recycling at Neste, emphasized the critical need for solutions addressing both climate emissions and the global plastic waste issue. He pointed out that the growing volumes of processed waste plastic reflect Neste's dedication to scaling up chemical recycling, as well as the commitment from their partners, suppliers, and the industry. Färkkilä expressed confidence in chemical recycling becoming a significant contributor to plastic circularity in the near future.

To facilitate this, Neste is using its existing refinery equipment for the current processing runs, setting the stage for continuous commercial processing. The company plans to considerably boost its processing volumes, following a 111 million euros investment announced in June for upgrading its liquefied plastic waste processing at the Porvoo refinery. This upgrade will increase the facility's capacity to 150,000 tons of liquefied waste plastic annually.

Markku Korvenranta, Executive Vice-President for Neste’s Oil Products, during the June announcement, outlined the progress in processing circular raw material at the Porvoo refinery and the plans for constructing a new facility. Scheduled for completion in the first half of 2025, this facility is expected to process 150,000 tons of liquefied waste plastic.

This upgrade, which is part of the pretreatment, upgrading, and refining process, marks the initial phase of Neste's EU Innovation Fund-supported PULSE project, aiming for an annual capacity of processing 400,000 tons of liquefied waste plastic.
