The American Bureau of Shipping is soon establishing an electrification center in Singapore. The plan aims to support decarbonization projects on a global scale. The center will appoint various technical specialists and ABS engineers in order to assist the electrification projects and handle the same for the stakeholders in the global marine industry. However, no timeline is provided by the ABS officials detailing the center's development.

The new center will focus more on the initiatives extended by Singapore’s Maritime and Port Authority (MPA) and will work closely on the same. Earlier this year, the MPA stated that its all-new harbor craft operating in the port of Singapore has to be fully electrically functional. Moreover, it has to be capable of using B100 biofuel or be compatible with the net-zero fuels variety such as hydrogen.
According to the president of the ABS and Chief Operating Officer, Mr. John McDonald, there is a need to incorporate additional alternative energy options in the shipping industry, specifically electrification, in order to achieve net zero by the year 2050. He also added that ABS would bring up its expertise in developing and advancing certain technologies that will ultimately benefit the shipping industry. ABS will help to develop fuel cells and shore power connection technologies along with battery technologies to understand the risks of electrified vessels and to support infrastructure planning.
Teo Eng Dih, the Chief Executive of MPA, has stated that the new center will complement the efforts that are made to electrify the domestic craft sectors in the industry. The plan will also add to the local knowledge and expertise on the evolution of electrification technologies and standards in the upcoming years.
