The technology at the heart of this venture is Topsoe's advanced SNOX™ solution, aimed at effectively removing a range of pollutants from flue gases produced during the refinery's operations. This includes the extraction of nitrogen oxides, sulfur dioxide, carbon monoxide, and various particulates. Topsoe's system stands out as a key component amongst several integrated solutions that Essar plans to employ at the plant, with a sharp focus on minimizing the CO2 footprint.

Elena Scaltritti, the Chief Commercial Officer at Topsoe, expressed great enthusiasm over being selected for this pivotal project. She emphasized the significance of this agreement for Topsoe's expansion within the UK, highlighting it as a vital milestone. Scaltritti remarked on the project's role in showcasing how the fossil industry can effectively transition towards more sustainable practices.

On the other side of the partnership, Deepak Maheshwari, the CEO of Essar Oil UK, shared insights into the broader scope of the company's decarbonization strategy. He noted that with an investment of $1.2 billion, Essar Oil UK is on track to become the world’s first low carbon refinery.

The carbon capture facility, in tandem with an upcoming hydrogen fuel switching project, is expected to dramatically reduce the refinery's CO2 emissions by up to 95%. Maheshwari acknowledged Topsoe's SNOX technology as a crucial element in achieving these ambitious environmental goals, praising its proven efficacy and sustainability in flue-gas treatment. This partnership marks a significant step forward in the energy sector’s ongoing efforts to combat climate change and reduce carbon emissions.
