Bernhard Schulte has recently announced a significant expansion of its fleet with the addition of its first CO2 tanker. Set to be constructed at Dalian Shipbuilding Offshore (DSOC), the new tanker will incorporate advanced technologies aimed at reducing its carbon footprint. The anticipated delivery of this innovative vessel is in 2026. It will be committed to a long-term charter agreement with Northern Lights, playing a crucial role in establishing the first cross-border CO2 transport and storage infrastructure.
This vessel marks the first of its kind for Bernhard Schulte and the fourth CO2 carrier for Northern Lights, a joint venture comprising Shell, TotalEnergies, and Equinor. Northern Lights has previously ordered three other vessels, with two currently under construction at DSOC and another ordered earlier this year.
Ian Beveridge, CEO of Bernhard Schulte, expressed excitement about joining the Northern Lights project, which aims to create CO2 transport and storage infrastructure. He noted the Schulte Group's longstanding relationships with Chinese shipyards, including DSOC, as a solid foundation for this project.
All four vessels designed for this purpose will have identical designs and a cargo capacity of 7,500 m3. As the first ships specifically built for transporting liquefied CO2, they will play a key role in transporting CO2 from Northern Lights’ customers to a receiving terminal in Norway for permanent geological storage.
Børre Jacobsen, Managing Director of Northern Lights, highlighted the importance of carbon capture and storage (CCS) in meeting climate targets and praised Bernhard Schulte's entry into the Liquid CO2 business as a crucial step towards successful partnerships.
The ships will primarily use LNG as fuel and will feature additional technologies like wind-assisted rotor sails and air lubrication, reducing their carbon footprint by about 34% compared to conventional marine fuel ships.
Yingzhi Sun, President of DSOC, expressed pride in the collaboration with Bernhard Schulte and the contribution to Northern Lights’ CCS projects. He assured the delivery of the vessel with the highest standards of quality and safety. This collaboration is seen as a significant step in providing liquefied CO2 transportation solutions.
According to the article by Procurement Resource, Bernhard Schulte is expanding its fleet with a pioneering CO2 tanker, constructed at Dalian Shipbuilding Offshore for delivery in 2026. Featuring advanced technologies for reduced carbon emissions, this vessel, the first for Schulte and the fourth for the Northern Lights project, will significantly contribute to cross-border CO2 transport and storage infrastructure.
