State-run GAIL has signed a long-term charter agreement for the LNG carrier Energy Fidelity, adding another vessel to its shipping plans as it works to secure overseas gas supplies for India. The agreement was signed on Tuesday with Pantheon Maritim Services Pvt Ltd, the Singapore-based affiliate of Greek ship manager Alpha Gas.

Energy Fidelity has a cargo capacity of 174,000 cubic metres, giving GAIL additional transport capacity as it expands its LNG charter fleet. The deal adds to the company’s push to build greater control over the movement of imported gas from international suppliers to Indian terminals. GAIL linked the agreement to the government’s Maritime Amrit Kaal Vision 2047, under which public sector companies are expected to support stronger domestic shipping and port-linked energy logistics. The latest charter comes at a time when India is seeking to raise the share of natural gas in its energy mix and reduce bottlenecks in supply chains tied to imported fuel.

The company has been widening its maritime partnerships in recent months. At India Energy Week in January, GAIL signed a term sheet tied to equity participation in LNG shipping and marine services through Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha, also known as K Line, and J M Baxi Marine Services. That move signalled a wider strategy that goes beyond fuel procurement and extends into shipping capacity and related infrastructure.

For GAIL, the new charter fits into a longer effort to secure reliable LNG access from global markets while improving delivery to Indian buyers. As demand for gas rises, control over vessel availability is becoming a more important part of the country’s energy planning.
