Channel Infrastructure Augments Jet Fuel Storage at Marsden Point Refinery

Channel Infrastructure, previously known as Refining NZ, has expanded its jet fuel storage capabilities at the former Marsden Point refinery, which has transitioned from a 135,000 b/d refinery to an oil product import terminal. The expansion involved repurposing jet fuel tanks from their original use as crude oil storage units, in a project valued between NZ$45mn-50mn ($27mn-$30mn).
This undertaking has augmented the storage capacity by approximately 630,000 bl, bringing the total jet fuel storage to an amount equivalent to roughly 25 days of pre-Covid-19 jet fuel demand from New Zealand's principal Auckland airport. Marsden Point serves as the primary jet fuel supplier to this airport.
Rob Buchanan, Channel Infrastructure's CEO, emphasized the significance of the expansion on 20 September, stating that the jet fuel storage available for clients at Marsden Point has more than doubled since its transition to an import terminal.

Furthermore, Channel Infrastructure had previously revealed its intentions to provide private fuel storage services after the transformation of Marsden Point into an oil product import hub. Even though the added storage tanks are now fully functional, the company plans to proceed with the construction of related firefighting systems and enhancements to bund structures through 2024.
Adding to the future potential of the site, Fortescue Future Industries (FFI), which is the green energy division of the prominent Australian iron ore producer Fortescue Metals, is collaborating with Channel Infrastructure. They are conducting a pre-feasibility analysis focused on integrating green hydrogen at Marsden Point. The ultimate objective of this initiative is to produce synthetic sustainable aviation fuel using the infrastructure at the former refinery location.

According to the article by Procurement Resource, Channel Infrastructure, once Refining NZ, has increased jet fuel storage at the Marsden Point refinery-turned-import terminal, boosting capacity by 630,000 bl, enough for 25 days of pre-Covid demand from Auckland airport.
On 20 September, CEO Rob Buchanan highlighted the storage's doubling since the site's transition. Though the tanks are operational, enhancements to firefighting and bund structures will continue till 2024. Moreover, Fortescue Future Industries is studying the feasibility of green hydrogen integration at Marsden Point to produce sustainable aviation fuel.
