California has recently initiated a lawsuit against major oil giants, including ExxonMobil, Chevron, ConocoPhillips, Shell, BP, and the trade association, the American Petroleum Institute (API). The lawsuit, filed in San Francisco, claims these firms hid the detrimental impacts of fossil fuels on the environment for over half a century, causing significant health and ecological damage to California.

The state, led by Governor Gavin Newsom, has accused the oil companies of deception and is urging them to establish a fund to alleviate the costs of climate-induced catastrophes like wildfires.

Attorney General Rob Bonta highlighted the magnitude of this action, noting that California, with its robust economy, is now the largest entity to challenge the oil sector over its role in the climate crisis.
