Silicon Metal Market Holds Sideways as China Winter Curtailments Loom and EU Lifts Solar Glass Duties

  • China silicon metal held sideways in late October on cost support and weak demand pull
  • Southwest China seasonal production cuts due at month end as hydro wet season ends
  • Silicone and crucible chains consolidated or declined, signalling softer downstream orders
  • European Commission repealed duties on Chinese solar glass effective October 22, 2026
  • Demand signal for silicon-based PV chain improves into first quarter 2027 term discussions

Silicon metal prices in China held in a tight sideways band through the second half of October 2026 as the market absorbed cost support from below and demand headwinds from above. Oxygen-blown and standard grades traded in a narrow range, with producers reluctant to cut offers while raw material and power costs stayed firm, and buyers from aluminium alloy, silicone, and photovoltaic chains unwilling to chase prices higher given weak downstream orders. The market's attention has shifted squarely to the seasonal production curtailment at silicon smelters in Southwest China towards month end, when the end of the hydroelectric wet season raises power tariffs and historically pushes smaller furnaces into idling.

The expected supply pullback is one of the few bullish anchors in the market. Through the summer and early autumn, Chinese silicon metal output had already come down from peak levels, and social inventories remain elevated even after some drawdown. If the Yunnan and Sichuan dry-season curtailment runs to script, fourth-quarter output could tighten enough to put a floor under the current price band. Working against that is weakness in the silicone chain, where DMC and intermediate grades are consolidating on subdued buying, and softness in crucible and refractory purchases that signals cooler steel and foundry activity.

The policy backdrop sharpened in the same window. The European Commission issued a notice repealing its definitive anti-dumping and countervailing duties on solar glass of Chinese origin, with the measure taking effect on October 22, 2026. Removing those duties should ease the landed cost of a core component in European solar module assembly, which supports module build rates and feeds back into stronger pull on polysilicon, wafers, and ultimately silicon metal. The move is being read in the market as a positive demand signal for the silicon-based PV chain into the first quarter of 2027, even if it does not translate into an immediate restocking cycle.

For procurement teams, the setup argues for careful tactical cover. Silicon metal buyers in aluminium alloy, chemical silicones, and PV polysilicon programmes should take advantage of the current sideways band to cover a larger share of November and December needs before Southwest China curtailments bite. Diversifying between Yunnan, Xinjiang, and Fujian origins protects against single-region power tariff shocks, and 2027 term discussions should move away from fixed premiums towards a formula indexed to coal, electricity, and silica raw material costs so that both the seasonal supply swing and the EU policy-driven demand pickup are reflected in landed cost.
