China’s toluene exports have jumped sharply through the first three quarters of 2026, with shipments reaching 1.3539 million tons during January to September. This already exceeds the full-year 2025 export volume and marks a structural shift in Asian toluene trade flows. South Korea took the largest share at 30.82 percent, followed by Singapore at 27.40 percent and Malaysia at 14.98 percent, pointing to a rerouting of refinery output that was earlier absorbed by domestic gasoline blending and solvent demand.
The export surge is being driven by weaker domestic consumption for toluene-based solvents, slower paint and coatings activity, and softer gasoline blending economics as refiners switch to alternate octane boosters. On the import side, China’s mixed xylenes intake fell to 136,400 tons during the same period, a sharp drop from about 880,000 tons a year earlier. The MX collapse reflects larger domestic reformate output and a swing toward paraxylene integrated units, which has reduced the pull on seaborne cargoes from the Middle East and Southeast Asia.

Spot prices in Asia moved to a three-month low during the window, with the market pricing in the oversupply from the Chinese export push alongside subdued downstream TDI and benzene derivative demand. A separate unit event added to the near-term supply balance, with a major Korean producer halting operation at one of its benzene and toluene units in late October for maintenance. The outage has not reversed the broader bearish tone because Chinese cargoes are available to backfill regional shortfalls.
For buyers, the current trade pattern creates a clear sourcing opportunity. Importers in Southeast Asia and South Asia can lock in cargoes at discounts of several percent against the levels seen in early October, and TDI, benzyl chloride, and solvent blenders in India and Vietnam are well placed to shift a part of their nomination volumes to Chinese origin. Term buyers negotiating fourth-quarter contracts should press for narrower premiums over spot given the length in the market, while retaining backup allocation from Middle East suppliers to hedge against any policy change in Chinese export rebates that could tighten availability through the first quarter of 2027.
