The oil looks clear to pale yellow in colour and has an aromatic presence (a pleasant, spicy aroma). It has a molecular weight of 164.21 g/mol and a density of 1.06 g/cm³. It is miscible in water, volatile oil, ether and chloroform. Its respective boiling and melting points are 254 °C and -7.5 °C.

Eugenol is mainly used in foods and teas as a flavouring agent, which is its primary market driver. Furthermore, it can be used to treat some health issues like toothache as a herbal oil; to treat gastrointestinal and respiratory issues. In addition, it finds application as a topical antiseptic, with zinc oxide in dental preparations as well as a counterirritant. Also, it is employed owing to its properties like neuroprotective, antioxidant, analgesic, anti-inflammatory, antipyretic, and antifungal.
