Linerboard is basically any grade of paperboard/containerboard that is ideal for making corrugated containers that do not include corrugating medium. It is used as a facing material for making corrugated or solid fibre shipping boxes. All the corrugated packaging is made up of Linerboard.

Linerboard is thin cardboard employed for flat facings corrugated containerboard. It is made by two methods for producing virgin and recycled linerboard. Virgin Linerboard is made by harvesting trees that are turned into pulp, while recycled linerboard is made by employing recycled material, including old, corrugated containers, also known as OCC. Recycled natural linerboard is produced using 10% recycled fibres and works best for tube and core form.

Linerboard offers properties like high tensile, burst, roughness, and compressing strength which makes it perfect for printing applications. It is used for making displays, folding cartons and graphical displays. Combined with other corrugated materials, it improves in terms of Bursting strength, Folding strength, and Water repellency and owing to all these properties, it can be used for making graphics, printing, signage, food and medical packaging that employs SBS (solid bleached sulphate). In addition, Poly Coated Linerboard is coated on one or both sides with polypropylene, including LDPE, MDPE, HDPE and PP. Also, HazMat Linerboard, after many treatments, can be used for some specialized hazardous materials.

Linerboard being heavier compared to Kraft paper is made to be used for manufacturing corrugated cartons or an average cardboard box which is its main application driving the market's growth. In addition, it is used for making tube and core, pallet liners, floor covering, interleaving and slip sheets, along with a protective overwrap for products that are shipped which furthers its market demand.

Additionally, the White Top Linerboard variation, which is white on one side and brown on the other, dresses up the container's outside. The white outside makes up for an excellent foundation for custom printing logos which is another application furthering the industry's expansion.
