Methanol Production Cost Report

Methanol, also known as methyl alcohol, is the simplest alcohol, it is a chemical building block used in a range of everyday products such as paints, plastics, automobile parts and construction materials. It is also used as a fuel as it is a clean energy resource used to power trucks, cars, ships, buses, boilers, fuel cells, and cookstoves. It is used in form a gasoline additive that reduces tailpipe air emissions and produce fuels like biodiesel to be used in automotive and aviation fuels.

It is often used as a solvent in manufacturing plastics and variety of paints. In addition, it is also used to manufacture acetic acid and formaldehyde (used in polymers). Other uses of the commodity include being an excellent energy carrier for producing hydrocarbons, as an antifreeze, as well as in the manufacturing of products such as resins, perfumes, and pharmaceuticals.

The main driver of the methanol market is its extensive use as a solvent in the chemical and plastic industries to produce paints and a variety of plastics. It is also of great value in the automotive sector, as it is extensively used for producing fuel (Biodiesel). The other big element driving up the demand for methanol is the pharmaceutical industry, as methanol is the key ingredient in the production of chemical agents for the manufacture of various pharmaceutical products.

Moreover, methanol is also used for the manufacture of adhesives and plywood, which enhances its demand in the construction industry. Therefore, due to high demand, there is a greater outflow in the cost of producing methanol. Moreover, the availability and cost of production of methanol’s feedstock (Syn gas, natural gas, naphtha), methanol market prices, distribution (including trading and shipping), logistics, etc., are some of the elements that influence industrial methanol procurement. The global procurement of this commodity is greatly influenced by its necessity as a key component for the chemical, automobile, pharmaceutical, and construction industries.

Raw Material for Methanol Production

According to the Methanol manufacturing plant project report, the major raw materials for Methanol production include Syn Gas; Natural Gas; Naphtha.

Manufacturing Process of Methanol

The extensive Methanol production cost report consists of these major industrial manufacturing processes:

  • Production from Syn gas: In this process, the reaction takes place in two different parts. The feed, or syngas, is heated to the necessary temperature for the initial synthesis of methanol after being pressurized. Afterwards the generated methanol is filtered out using phase separators and distillation columns.

  • Production from Natural Gas: This procedure generates methanol from natural gas. Synthetic gas is produced and compressed after natural gas has been desulfurized. Methanol is produced further in the following stages and compressed.

  • Production from Naphtha via Partial Oxidation: This method uses the partial oxidation process to produce methyl alcohol from naphtha. This technique involves partially oxidizing naphtha to create synthesis gas, which is then transformed into methyl alcohol or methanol.

Methanol (CH3OH), or methyl alcohol, is the simplest (alcohol) of long-series organic compounds comprising a methyl group (CH3) attached to a hydroxy group (OH). It functions as an amphiprotic solvent, a mouse metabolite, an Escherichia coli metabolite, a human metabolite, and a Mycoplasma genitalium metabolite. Methanol is a colourless and volatile liquid that has a faint and sweet pungent smell similar to ethyl alcohol.

It is a light, flammable, and poisonous liquid. It is totally water-soluble with vapours heavier than air, with the ability to travel further from the ignition source. Its Molecular Weight is 32.04 g/mol with a density of 792 kg/m³. It has a boiling and melting point of 64.7 °C and 97.6 °C, respectively.
