Asia

The Chinese acetone market experienced volatility throughout the fourth quarter, characterized by sharp directional shifts and range-bound trading phases. The prices were about 599 USD/MT (Spot) in October and around 578 USD/MT in December.  The quarter opened with a precipitous decline as oversupply conditions emerged and downstream demand from paints, coatings, and adhesives sectors weakened.

This initial drop reflected inventory pressures and cautious procurement from chemical intermediate manufacturers producing methyl methacrylate and bisphenol A. A brief recovery attempt materialized as buyers engaged in tactical restocking and supply conditions temporarily tightened, though this proved short-lived. The market subsequently entered an extended period of volatile sideways trading as participants assessed supply-demand balances amid fluctuating consumption from electronics cleaning and pharmaceutical applications. The latter portion witnessed renewed downward pressure before stabilizing at lower levels, with cautious sentiment prevailing across solvent and chemical derivative sectors.

Meanwhile, the Indian acetone market displayed an overall downward pattern during the fourth quarter.  The prices were about 669 USD/MT (Spot) in October and around 627 USD/MT in December. Initial stability gave slight upward momentum as supply tightness emerged and downstream demand from pharmaceutical manufacturing and cosmetics applications intensified. However, the elevated pricing proved unsustainable as the middle portion initiated a prolonged declining trajectory. Supply conditions normalized while downstream consumption from chemical intermediates and industrial solvent applications weakened progressively. The downward momentum accelerated through the latter portion as buyers adopted wait-and-see approaches and inventory destocking pressures mounted.

Europe

European acetone markets largely mirrored the volatility and directional patterns observed across Asian regions during the fourth quarter. The market experienced initial weakness followed by temporary stabilization phases and subsequent renewed downward pressure. Demand from pharmaceutical, coatings, and chemical intermediate applications remained measured, while supply availability stayed adequate across the region. Market participants demonstrated cautious procurement strategies aligned with broader global sentiment.

North America

North American acetone markets followed trends consistent with Asian and European regions throughout the fourth quarter. Prices exhibited similar volatility patterns with initial softness, brief stabilization attempts, and resumed downward movement. Downstream consumption from solvents, adhesives, and chemical manufacturing applications showed limited growth momentum. Supply conditions remained comfortable as buyers maintained conservative inventory positions.

About Acetone

In appearance, Acetone is a colourless organic solvent which has mild, sweetish odour. It is volatile and flammable in nature. Acetone is found naturally in plants and trees. Acetone is miscible with water and is used as an as an important solvent in industry, home, and laboratory. It is extensively used in the production of methyl methacrylate and bisphenol A.

Acetone Production Processes

  • Production of Acetone from Propylene and Benzene via the Cumene Process; from Isopropanol; via Direct Oxidation; and via Indirect Oxidation

In the cumene process, benzene is alkylated with the help of propene, which is further oxidised to produce Acetone with phenol. This production process utilises a significant amount of air and nearly all acetone production takes place via the cumene route where 0.62 tonnes of acetone is prepared with each tonne of phenol. Being a co-product to phenol, the availability of acetone also depends upon the market conditions for phenol.
