In the first quarter of 2022, Ethyl Acetate prices in India were reported to be 1159 USD/MT ex-Kandla and 1186 USD/MT ex-Mumbai. Prices remained constant at the lower end due to a lacklustre trading environment and product saturation in the regional market. Even though the supply was plentiful, demand was weak. Additionally, the government reduced the production tax on key chemicals, such as acetic acid and methanol, which lowered domestic prices. Upstream natural gas prices increased in response to geopolitical tensions between Russia and Ukraine, while stocks of Indian companies with exposure to Europe has fallen amid concerns about the impact on their sales if the Russia-Ukraine crisis worsens and the US and its allies impose financial sanctions on Russia.

Ethyl Acetate is a carboxylate ester. It is a colourless liquid that has a sweet, fruity odour that most people find pleasant. Ethyl Acetate is a polar aprotic solvent. It has two dipole moments, generated by its two high electronegative oxygen atoms, which are on the carbonyl and ethyl groups. Ethyl Acetate is a standard solvent, which is especially used for paints, varnishes, lacquers, cleaning, and perfumes. In a laboratory, Ethyl Acetate is used as a universal solvent in the process of thin-layer and column chromatography.

Production Processes

  • Production of Ethyl Acetate via Fischer Esterification; via Dehydrogenation of Ethanol; and via Tishchenko Reaction

Ethyl Acetate is produced from the reaction of ethanol and acetic acid. The process includes a small amount of sulphuric acid to be preheated and then refluxed by feeding it into an esterifying column. The mixture then goes through to a second refluxing column, to remove around 85% ethyl acetate.  Then, the water is mixed and it causes a separation into two layers. The residue is then fed into another refluxing column to remove any final impurities to manufacture 95% Ethyl Acetate.
