About Kraft Linerboard

Kraft linerboard is a strong paperboard material made primarily from kraft pulp and used as the outer layer of corrugated packaging. It provides high tensile strength, stiffness, and resistance to bursting. Kraft linerboard is available in virgin and recycled grades and is widely used for manufacturing corrugated boxes and industrial packaging solutions.

Production Process

Kraft linerboard production involves pulping wood fibres, preparing the fibre slurry, forming paper sheets, and drying them under controlled conditions. Manufacturers optimize fibre quality, basis weight, moisture content, and strength properties to produce linerboard suitable for corrugated packaging applications.

Industrial Uses

Kraft linerboard is mainly used in the production of corrugated boxes for packaging industries including food and beverages, e-commerce, consumer goods, chemicals, and electronics. It provides structural strength and protection during transportation. It is also used in heavy-duty packaging applications where durability, recyclability, and load-bearing capacity are required.

Frequently Asked Questions

Kraft linerboard prices are driven by the balance between mill input costs and packaging demand. Pulp, energy, chemicals and logistics are the main cost inputs, so when these run above long-run averages they raise mill production economics for kraftliner. On the demand side, corrugated-packaging consumption tracks e-commerce, FMCG and industrial shipping volumes. When demand holds firm against disciplined mill output and high operating rates, producers can push prices higher, while ample supply or soft demand eases them.
Paper and paperboard production is globally concentrated, with China the largest producer and the United States second, and the US the leading producer of kraft linerboard specifically, home to major integrated producers such as International Paper and Packaging Corporation of America. Canada, Europe and Asia also host significant containerboard capacity. This concentration ties supply security to a few large producing regions and their mill output and capacity decisions.
Recent industry data point to a firming containerboard market. Reduced mill operating rates and capacity adjustments, set against elevated pulp, energy and chemical input costs, tightened containerboard supply after a prolonged flat stretch. With utilisation running high and mills holding output discipline, producers have been able to push through staged price increases. Higher utilisation against restrained production is the kind of supply discipline that tends to support firmer pricing.
Kraft linerboard is produced from softwood trees, which are chipped and chemically pulped using the Kraft process to separate cellulose fibers. The pulp is then washed, screened, and formed into a wet sheet on a paper machine before being pressed and dried into finished linerboard. The primary downstream use is the outer ply of corrugated boxes for shipping and packaging, with additional applications in packaging and transportation sectors.
End-user demand from corrugated box manufacturers, e-commerce packaging, retail distribution, and industrial sack producers has been a key price-supporting factor for kraft linerboard. Steady order volumes from these downstream sectors kept converter purchasing active, preventing mills from building excess inventory. At the same time, limited supply-side response meant demand growth translated directly into firmer price movement rather than being absorbed by additional output.
Input costs that remain above long-term averages feed directly into production economics for kraftliner, raising mill-level production costs and supporting staged price adjustments across the market. While some inputs have stabilised from peak inflation levels, their elevated baseline continues to pressure converting economics, allowing producers to pass cumulative cost increases through to containerboard pricing.
Procurement Resource assesses kraft linerboard prices through a structured, data-driven methodology combining primary engagement with producers, suppliers and traders, secondary market data, continuous monitoring of feedstock and input costs, trade-flow and inventory tracking, and exchange or spot benchmarks. All inputs are validated and translated into a transparent price assessment and outlook. The detailed methodology is available on the Procurement Resource website.
