Patchouli oil prices moved higher during the third quarter of 2026, as origin markets in Indonesia, which supplies most of the world's patchouli oil, recovered from the depressed levels seen early in the year. The rally began in July, when prolonged dry weather and fears of a strong El Niño raised concerns over leaf yields and distillation output, prompting rapid repricing at source. Supply was further constrained by Indonesia's new BPAP export certification requirement, which slowed shipments and reduced the volume of oil reaching international buyers. Farmers, after weak returns earlier in the year, held back sales, adding to tightness at collector level. Prices in Aceh kept climbing through September and remained highly volatile, coinciding with the usual seasonal strengthening of the second half. Trade data confirmed the price-led nature of the market, as Indonesia's patchouli oil export earnings rose on higher selling prices rather than any expansion in planted area. For fragrance buyers in North America and Europe, this meant firmer landed costs and slower deliveries, though a wide quality spread, including cheaper oil differing in composition from premium grades, offered limited relief.

Indonesia remained the key global supply base and firmer offers at origin were transmitted into European landed costs, particularly for buyers in major fragrance processing markets such as France. Supply-chain uncertainty also encouraged some customers to advance purchases, providing additional support during the quarter. European fragrance demand remained healthy, with fine fragrances showing stronger momentum than several other personal-care categories. This helped maintain consumption of natural aromatic ingredients such as patchouli oil even as procurement costs increased. Higher energy, processing, packaging and freight expenses added to importer and distributor costs, allowing suppliers to maintain firmer offers. However, buyers remained selective and generally avoided excessive inventory accumulation, which prevented a sharper rise.
