Piroctone Olamine Price Trend

Piroctone Olamine is a well-known chemical that can be found in a variety of hair care products. It comes from the petrochemical industry. It's an ethanolamine salt made from piroctone, a hydroxamic acid derivative. Typically, piroctone olamine is used instead of zinc pyrithione, which is a common chemical. Ammonia and ethylene oxide (EO) are used to make ethanolamines in the commercial world. After the operating rates in the United States began to improve post-hurricane season, the North American ethylene oxide market began to stabilise in the fourth quarter of 2021. Furthermore, the dramatic drop in the arbitrage from the US was aided by congestion, restricted availability of freight vessels, and expensive rates for Asia Pacific delivery. Furthermore, throughout the fourth quarter, cost support from upstream ethylene plummeted dramatically. The offered bids for EO fell proportionally as a result, and the FOB Gulf coast spot discussion was decided at 1510 USD/MT towards the conclusion of the quarter.

Production Processes

  • Production of Piroctone Olamine via Esterification of 3,3’DMAA

In this process, esterification of 3,3’DMAA and subsequent condensation produces isononayl derivatives of 3,3’ DMAA, which undergoes cyclisation in the presence of sodium methoxide followed by neutralisation to give crude 4-methyl-6-(2,4,4-trimetylpentyl)-2-pyrone. It is then purified using high vacuum distillation and further processed to finally react with monoethanolamine under chilled condition and form Crude Piroctone Olamine.
