Benzene Buyers Face Higher Feedstocks and Weak Derivative Demand

  • Benzene prices rose with crude oil and naphtha.
  • Downstream profitability restricted buyer demand.
  • Benzene feedstock spreads remained narrow.
  • Lower derivative operating rates could limit future demand.
  • Buyers can use shorter coverage during feedstock-led increases.

Asian benzene prices strengthened during the week of 20 to 24 July as crude oil and naphtha costs moved higher. FOB Korea benzene values followed the rise in feedstock markets, but the gap between benzene prices and production inputs remained narrow. This left producers with limited room to recover higher costs.

Demand from downstream industries did not rise at the same pace. Weak profitability across derivative markets restricted buying interest for benzene and other aromatics. Customers were reluctant to increase bids enough to match sellers’ higher cost expectations.

The split between feedstock costs and downstream demand creates a difficult purchasing signal. Benzene buyers face higher replacement costs, but weak derivative margins can limit the duration of any price rise. Styrene, phenol, cyclohexane and other derivative producers may reduce operating rates if selling prices fail to cover feedstock expenses.

Procurement teams should track naphtha and crude oil alongside benzene rather than treating benzene as an isolated market. A rise driven mainly by feedstocks can reverse when energy costs fall. A price increase supported by lower benzene production or stronger derivative demand can last longer and require earlier purchasing coverage.

Buyers should also review regional differences. FOB Korea is an export benchmark, but delivered cost will include freight, insurance, financing and local port charges. A rise in the benchmark does not always produce the same percentage increase for every destination. Existing inventory and vessel availability can widen or narrow the final change.

Short purchase extensions can reduce exposure when market direction is uncertain. Buyers may cover immediate operating needs and retain flexibility for later deliveries rather than fixing a large quarterly volume after a feedstock-led increase. This approach should be balanced against plant inventories and the cost of an unexpected supply interruption.

Derivative margins deserve close attention. When styrene, phenol or nylon intermediates are unprofitable, producers may lower utilisation and reduce benzene demand. Lower run rates can cap benzene increases even when crude oil remains expensive. Producers may also cut benzene output if refinery or cracker economics weaken, which would tighten supply.

Contracts should identify the benchmark period, shipment window, quality specification and freight basis. Clear pricing terms make it easier to compare suppliers when energy markets move rapidly.
