Coffee Production Plans Expand in Nagaland with Focus on Premium Beans

  • Coffee cultivation is expanding across several Nagaland districts.
  • Both Arabica and Robusta are being grown.
  • Plans focus on productivity and quality improvement.
  • Processing infrastructure and mechanization are being strengthened.
  • Specialty and premium coffee are being targeted for future growth.

Nagaland is stepping up efforts to develop its coffee industry through higher productivity, better processing, mechanization and stronger market links. The state government and Coffee Board of India reviewed the progress of coffee cultivation and discussed measures to strengthen the industry from farm production through processing and marketing.

Coffee is already being cultivated across several districts of Nagaland, with both Arabica and Robusta varieties in production. The state is now looking to build on that base by improving farm practices and increasing the supply of quality planting material.

Infrastructure is a major focus. Farmers are receiving support for drying yards, mechanization and training, while officials are looking at ways to improve processing capacity. Better post-harvest infrastructure can reduce quality losses and give growers greater control over the final characteristics of their beans.

For coffee procurement teams, this could create a wider pool of specialty and premium beans from northeastern India over time. Buyers seeking differentiated origins may gain another domestic sourcing option if production volumes and quality become consistent enough for commercial contracts.

Several barriers still need to be addressed. Poor road connectivity can increase the cost and time required to move coffee from farms to processing centers. Limited processing infrastructure can also restrict the ability of growers to produce higher-value specialty grades at scale. Climate conditions and small landholdings create additional production constraints.

The development program is therefore focused on the entire supply chain rather than only increasing acreage. Training, mechanization, processing, branding and market access are all being considered. This approach can improve the commercial value of coffee when production expands.

Specialty certification and value-added processing also provide opportunities for local roasters and exporters. Higher-quality beans can attract buyers seeking distinct regional profiles, provided producers can maintain consistency between harvests.

Procurement teams interested in Indian specialty coffee should monitor production growth, processing capacity and certification progress in Nagaland. Early engagement with cooperatives and processors could help buyers understand available grades and future volumes before the region becomes more established in premium coffee markets.

The state still has a developing supply base, so it should not be treated as an immediate replacement for established origins. Its growing institutional support, however, gives Nagaland a clearer path toward becoming a source of premium Indian coffee.

  • Nagaland is expanding coffee cultivation across several districts.
  • Arabica and Robusta are both being produced.
  • Government support includes drying yards and mechanization.
  • Specialty and premium coffee are targeted for future development.
  • Better roads and processing infrastructure remain necessary for scale.
