Global vinegar markets moved into October 2026 with a sharper cost push behind both industrial and food grade grades, as acetic acid feedstock prices climbed sharply in Asia and Europe lost its last major in region supply of acetyl chain product. Acetic acid benchmarks in India and China rose about 9 to 13 percent through September 2026 before holding flat in the final week of the month, with CFR India moving up roughly 9 percent to about 0.650 United States dollars per kilogram, domestic Kandla prices climbing about 10 percent to 0.816 dollars per kilogram, and FOB China gaining nearly 13 percent to about 0.540 dollars per kilogram. The move pulled the cost base for distilled white vinegar higher at the same time that European food manufacturers lost direct access to local acetic acid supply.
The structural reset came out of the United Kingdom. On September 22, Ineos began idling three acetyls plants at Saltend in Hull, mothballing capacity of 500,000 tonnes per year of acetic acid, 150,000 tonnes of acetic anhydride, and 200,000 tonnes of ethyl acetate. The producer cited European gas prices running about 12 times United States levels and 8 times Chinese production costs. The decision closed Europe's last world scale acetyls complex and set up a near full reliance on imports from the United States and China for the next 12 to 18 months. European vinegar makers in Germany, Italy, Spain, and France will feel the cost pass through on glacial acetic acid used for dilution grade industrial vinegar as import freight and insurance add to the delivered base.

Methanol, the main upstream input for acetic acid, moved higher through September as well. FOB China methanol posted the largest gain, close to 19 percent, while CFR China and CFR South Korea each rose about 11 percent. Southeast Asian methanol saw the smallest move, close to 6 percent. Higher crude oil values added to overall energy cost pressure through October. Operating rates at Chinese acetic acid plants held near 80 percent through the end of September, with inventories thin and planned maintenance shutdowns pulling spot cargoes further from a balanced position.
Downstream vinegar producers used a mix of hedging and inventory buildup to buffer the move. Food grade distilled vinegar makers in India, Southeast Asia, and Latin America drew down forward contracted volumes to delay spot exposure, while contract renewals for industrial and cleaning grade vinegar across Europe reflected cost pass through of 5 to 8 percent in October. Fermented vinegar producers using grain, apple, rice, or wine inputs faced a different cost picture, with raw material volatility tied to local harvest and currency rather than acetic acid.
For procurement teams in food processing, condiment, salad dressing, pickling, and cleaning product supply chains, the near term action is to lock in November and December vinegar coverage before further acetic acid tightness or energy cost moves push base pricing higher. Private label and quick service kitchen buyers should confirm bilateral volumes with suppliers running on contract acetic acid rather than spot. Industrial and cleaning grade vinegar users should stress test fourth quarter cost models against a scenario where FOB China acetic acid firms toward 0.580 dollars per kilogram if Chinese export arbitrage into Europe remains structurally open through 2027.
