Egypt and Qatar have formalized an agreement aimed at enhancing cooperation in the areas of LNG sales and imports. This deal outlines the terms for the supply of Qatari LNG shipments to Egypt, specifically to the Ain Sokhna and Damietta ports. The agreement, which was announced by Egypt's Petroleum Ministry on Sunday, includes the provision of up to 24 cargoes of liquefied natural gas (LNG) to Cairo for the summer months.

QatarEnergy, in its statement, confirmed that the deal involves these supplies, which come at a time when Egypt is seeking to diversify its energy sources and ramp up its natural gas production. The country, which is the largest in the Arab world, has faced challenges in meeting its energy demands after production began to decline in late 2022. This decline has placed added pressure on Egypt's ambitions to become a regional energy hub, pushing the country to seek significant imports from Israel, Cyprus, and even costly LNG cargoes.
Data from the Joint Organizations Data Initiative shows that Egypt's natural gas production stood at 3,635 million cubic meters in October, a slight increase from 3,525 million cubic meters in September, though it remains lower than the 3,851 million cubic meters produced in October 2024. Despite these production challenges, Egypt's Petroleum Minister, Karim Badawi, affirmed the country's goal of achieving self-sufficiency in oil and natural gas, as stated in a recent cabinet announcement.
