  • India is seeing rapid growth in domestic manufacturing for lithium ion batteries used in energy storage
  • GoodEnough Energy has commissioned a 7 GWh storage focused factory in Noida with plans to scale to over 25 GWh
  • Rising renewable capacity is driving strong demand for grid scale and industrial energy storage
  • ChemVolt Global plans a 5 GWh lithium ion cell gigafactory in Andhra Pradesh with phased development
  • New projects cover both cell manufacturing and complete storage systems for local and global markets

India’s domestic manufacturing base for lithium ion batteries used in stationary storage is gathering pace as new large scale facilities come online. A key development is the commissioning of a battery energy storage system factory by GoodEnough Energy in Noida, Uttar Pradesh. With an initial capacity of 7 GWh, the plant is now operational and stands as the biggest storage focused battery facility in the country. Built with an investment of more than $49.2 million, the project signals a clear shift toward building local capacity for grid scale energy storage as renewable power continues to grow.

GoodEnough Energy, founded in 2023, is positioning itself around energy storage solutions aimed at utility, commercial, and industrial users. The company has already started deploying storage systems across India and reports growing interest from customers in sectors that depend on reliable power supply. The Noida plant is central to its plans, with capacity expected to rise beyond 25 GWh over the next three years. This expansion is closely tied to India’s push to scale non fossil power generation and the rising need for storage to manage variability from solar and wind sources.

India has crossed 254 GW of renewable energy capacity and is working toward a target of 500 GW by 2030. As renewable penetration increases, storage demand is rising sharply to maintain grid stability and reliability. Industry estimates point to the need for more than 200 GWh of energy storage over the coming years. New manufacturing projects like the one in Noida reduce dependence on imports while shortening supply timelines for domestic developers.

Parallel to developments in system assembly, cell manufacturing is also seeing fresh momentum. ChemVolt Global has signed an agreement with the Andhra Pradesh government to set up a lithium ion cell gigafactory with a planned capacity of 5 GWh. The project carries a proposed investment of $273 million and is intended to serve grid scale storage, electric mobility, and commercial and industrial applications. The company plans to build the facility in phases, starting with a 1 GWh production line by the third quarter of 2027 and scaling to full capacity by 2029.

The Andhra Pradesh plant will focus on prismatic lithium ion cells with capacities of 314 Ah and 750 Ah, designed for stationary storage, heavy electric vehicles, and industrial use. Alongside the cell project, ChemVolt Global has also widened its energy storage system offerings with new containerized and cabinet based products for utility scale and commercial customers. Together, these announcements show how India’s battery sector is moving across the value chain, from cells to complete storage systems, as demand for dependable clean energy infrastructure continues to rise.
