India Witnesses The Lowest Palm Oil

Imports Of Indian Palm Oil Reach A New 27-Month Low As Buyers Shift To More Inexpensive Oils

Imports of palm oil in India have dipped to new lows in May, being the lowest in 27 months due to weak demand from buyers. This is owing to the availability of cheaper substitute oils like sunflower oil and soy oil, which led people to cancel their cargo.

As per the estimated average Indian imports dipped by 14% from 510,094 tonnes in April to 441,000 tonnes the previous month. May imports hit the lowest levels compared to February 2021.

The plunge in purchasing activity by the biggest vegetable oil importer in the world put stress on prices of palm oil, which have already hit their lowest in 30 months.

India purchases palm oil from the leading two producers, Malaysia and Indonesia, as well as Thailand, while sunflower oil and soy oil are imported from Brazil, Ukraine, Argentina, and Russia.

Buyers from Asia that are looking to save more usually depend on palm oil as it is cheaper and can be shipped fast.

May imports of Indian sunflower oil climbed by 28% to 319,00 tonnes from the previous month, while imports of soy oil reached 290,000 tonnes higher by 10%.

Palm oil's status in the market has been failing in the last few months, and it would not be able to re-establish its position unless it evolves into a more competitive oil.

According to the Procurement Resource article, the Indian palm oil imports hit a new 27-Month Low recently as buyers preferred buying le ss expensive oils like sunflower oil and soy oil.

People are cancelling their cargoes for the oil, which is adding additional stress on the commodity. Primarily Asia imports most of this oil due to it being cheaper and readily available; however, the commodity is losing its place in the industry due to it not being more competitive.
