  • Iron ore futures on Dalian climbed to a four-week high of CNY 690 per tonne on November 5, 2026
  • Import ore margin turned positive to CNY 2.36 per tonne from a loss of CNY 3.09 per tonne
  • Australian and Brazilian shipments rose 1.3 percent to 27.9 million tonnes in the week to November 2
  • 17 Chinese blast furnaces under maintenance in October cut daily hot metal output by 57,100 tonnes
  • Combined output from 16 major global miners rose about 22.98 million tonnes year on year in Q1 to Q3 2026

China's iron ore market opened November 2026 with sharp two-way price action as rising seaborne shipments, soft Chinese restocking, and blast furnace maintenance curbs pulled futures through a volatile first week. On November 3, benchmark iron ore futures in Dalian held below CNY 680 per tonne, close to four-year lows, as Australian and Brazilian shipments climbed 1.3 percent week on week to 27.9 million tonnes in the period ended November 2. Mill restocking remained subdued, and northern provincial environmental curbs continued to limit daily hot metal output. By November 5, the market reversed sharply, with futures advancing toward CNY 690 per tonne, a four-week high, as the average margin on imported ore turned positive, rising from a loss of CNY 3.09 per tonne to a gain of CNY 2.36 per tonne on slightly lower freight and higher Chinese portside spot prices.

The supply picture is tightening into year-end. Combined output from the 16 largest global iron ore miners rose by about 22.98 million tonnes year on year in the first three quarters of 2026, pointing to a comfortable seaborne pipeline into China. But on the Chinese side, the maintenance slate at integrated mills has deepened. Seventeen Chinese blast furnaces were under maintenance through October 2026, pulling daily hot metal output down by about 57,100 tonnes. The fall-through from the autumn rate cut was offset by heavier winter environmental curbs across Hebei and Shanxi, where regional authorities tightened production limits ahead of the heating season. Port inventories remain elevated at about 153 million tonnes, which keeps a ceiling on any rally even as mill margins improve.

For procurement teams, the November setup argues for a tactical cover-and-hedge stance. Steel mills in the Middle East, India, Southeast Asia, and the Mediterranean should take advantage of the current volatility to lock a share of November and December cargoes against Australian 62 percent fines CFR China and Brazilian 65 percent fines CFR China benchmarks, while watching the Simandou ramp pace in Guinea for the first dedicated cargoes that are due to begin loading. Buyers with origin flexibility should split cover between Pilbara, Carajás, Simandou, and Zanaga sources once the new cargoes clear port, with pellet and lump premium exposures renegotiated against the current narrow fines-lump spread. Term discussions for 2027 should move away from fixed premiums over the Platts 62 percent index towards a formula indexed to Mysteel port stocks and hot metal output so that both the seaborne supply swing and the Chinese steel demand correction flow through contract pricing. Buyers with firm first-quarter programmes should budget for continued range-bound trading in the CNY 660 to 720 per tonne band on Dalian, with upside risk capped by the Simandou ramp and the downside anchored by the current blast furnace maintenance slate.
